Lower Back Pain - Lumbago

Lower back pain image. Lumbago is defined as pain in the lower back. This pain can be caused from several different tissues including ligaments, muscles and tendons. Lower back pain can come from a sprain strain injury to the muscles of the lower back, biomechanical instability of one of the many joints of the lumbar spine, or can be generated from the visceral tissues: kidneys, ureters, and colon of the abdomen. A ruptured disk, which if left untreated, could cause pain and damage to the delicate nerves of the Lumbar spine and should be ruled out as a cause of lower back pain.

Depending on the severity and cause of the injury, chiropractic can be very effective at treating lower back pain caused from a sprain strain injury, biomechanical instability of the lumbar spine, and to some extent the pain associated with a disk injury.

Only by being evaluated by a qualified physician, which should include your local chiropractor, can the causes of this low back pain be discovered and addressed. If the cause was suspected or found to be visceral in nature, you would be referred to your family physician for co-management. If, however, your back pain were found to be biomechanical in nature, a chiropractic adjustment would be the most effective treatment tool as well as other adjunctive procedures.
